Colorado bail bond pricing, explained
What the 15% standard premium covers, when the 10% reduced rate applies, and why DUI is different.
There are three numbers worth knowing about Colorado bail bond pricing: 15%, 10%, and the threshold that connects them.
15% is the standard
The standard bail bond premium in Colorado is 15% of the bond amount. That premium is non-refundable — it’s the fee the bondsman charges for posting bail on the defendant’s behalf. There are no hidden fees behind it.
A $10,000 bond at the standard rate costs the cosigner $1,500.
10% is available with a cosigner — over $5,000
On bonds above $5,000, the premium can often be reduced to 10% with an approved cosigner. The 10% rate is contingent on the cosigner clearing underwriting — typically that means a stable address, a job, and the willingness to take on the financial responsibility if the defendant misses court.
A $10,000 bond at the reduced rate costs the cosigner $1,000.
DUI is statutory: 10%, no underwriting required
Colorado state law fixes the bail bond premium for DUI charges at 10%. It is not a negotiation. Whether the bond is $1,000 or $25,000, the premium is 10% of the bond amount.
DUI is also subject to a mandatory 8-hour hold from the time of booking before any bond can be posted. The 8-hour hold is unrelated to the premium — it’s a release rule, not a pricing rule.
What the premium does NOT cover
The premium is the bondsman’s fee. It does not cover:
- Fines or fees imposed by the court. Those are separate, and they are paid to the court directly.
- Restitution. Decided at sentencing, also separate.
- Cash-only bonds. Some courts set bonds as cash-only — meaning a bondsman cannot post them. We do not handle cash-only bonds; we write surety bonds.
What we don’t do
We are Colorado-only. We do not write out-of-state bonds or out-of-state transfers. If the booking is outside Colorado, call us anyway and we will tell you who can help.
If the bond is set as cash-only by the court, we will tell you that on the call. The 15% premium and the 10% reduced rate are for surety bonds — the most common kind in Colorado.
